1. WHAT IS IT?
This tool imports elevation data from an 8bit greyscale raw bitmap
image to an uncompressed C&C Generals map file.
2. WHY WRITE THIS?
C&C Generals is capable of very detailed terrains but hand crafting
the land is very time consuming and the map editor has no import
First off you will need a map file to import the data to. In the
Generals Worldbuilder create a new map of the size you want. From
the “Edit” menu, choose “Edit Map Settings…” and set the
compression to “No Compression”. Now save the file.
Now you will need an 8bit greyscale raw bitmap image containing the
elevation data. This can either be brushed in a paint program like
Paintshop Pro, exported from a landscape generator such as Terragen
or downloaded / converted from sites like edc.usgs.gov that contain
libraries of geographic elevation data.
The raw bitmap size should be as follows…
raw bitmap width = map width + border size x 2
raw bitmap height = map height + border size x 2
Map width = 450
Map height = 300
Map border = 30
Raw bitmap width = 450 + 30 x 2 = 510
Raw bitmap height = 300 + 30 x 2 = 360
In the tool, select your files and fill in the width and height values
with the raw bitmap size.
Now that everything is filled in, click “Validate”. If everything
checks out then the “Import” button will become available, Click
“Import” and that’s it. Open the map in Worldbuilder and there it is.
The map data is imported upside-down due to the format of the map file,
I have left it this way as it is much quicker to process – flip it
using a paint program if you really need to.
The raw bitmap image data is unsigned, zero being lowest and 255 being
